Variability and Uniformity in Ceramics at the Stubbs Cluster Sites, A Hopewell Earthwork and Associated Middle Woodland Sites
Ted S. Sunderhaus, Cincinnati Museum Center
This paper will attempt to understand the differences between site size, location, and function of a group of associated Middle Woodland sites near the Stubbs geometric Hopewell earthworks in Warren County, Ohio, primarily using ceramics recovered during survey and testing. While pottery recovery is rare at this earthwork cluster, a number of locations have produced minor amounts of pottery, and more recent developments near the earthwork have exposed deposits with moderate to substantial amounts of Middle Woodland ceramics. The more pottery-rich deposits are at least suggestive of domestic activities; however, the association of these outliers with activities at the earthwork is not well understood.
